The Extensive GEO Audit

6 min read
Updated Oct 20, 2026

The free check looks at one page and tells you what is wrong. The extensive audit looks across your site and tells you how to fix it: every issue, the pages it affects, the steps, ready-made code and a prompt you can paste into your AI assistant. It costs a one-off £1.99 per report, or it is included in Footnoted Pro.

Running an Extensive Audit

  1. 1 Run a free check and wait for the report to finish
  2. 2 Click "Run extensive audit" on the report
  3. 3 Sign in, or create a free account and verify your email - the audit belongs to your account
  4. 4 Pay by card on the secure checkout page - or, with Footnoted Pro, click "Run extensive audit" on the report to use one of your monthly audits without a checkout
  5. 5 You return to your report, where the audit is already running

If your report says extensive audits are coming soon, they are not on sale yet - your free report is unaffected.

If someone shared a report with you, running the audit adds a copy of the report to your own account; the original is left as it was.

Your Fixes

Every issue the audit finds becomes a fix, most important first. Each one shows:

  • **Severity** - critical, high, medium, low or optional. Blocked AI search crawlers and content that only appears after JavaScript runs are critical; llms.txt is low; whether to allow AI training crawlers is optional, because blocking them is a legitimate choice
  • **The pages it affects** - out of the pages we crawled. Often one fix to a shared template covers them all
  • **Why it matters** for AI answers, and **how to fix it**, step by step
  • **A ready-made snippet** where one helps - the robots.txt lines for the crawlers you block, Organization or FAQPage schema, meta tags or a canonical tag, filled in with your site's details
  • **Where to click on your platform** when we can tell what your site is built with - WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Next.js or Ghost

Fix It With Your AI Assistant

Every fix has a **Copy prompt** button. Paste the prompt into the AI assistant you already use - ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Cursor - and it has everything it needs: your site, what it is built with, the issue, the pages affected and our snippet. The prompt asks the assistant to explain the fix, give you the exact steps or code for your platform, tell you how to check it worked, and ask you for anything it does not know rather than invent it.

At the top of the audit, **Fix everything with AI** gives you one prompt for the most important fixes. It walks you through them one at a time and waits for you to say "done" before moving on.

Check Before You Publish

An AI assistant can still get things wrong. Read what it suggests, and test structured data with a schema validator before it goes live.

**Download fix pack (.md)** saves every fix, snippet and prompt as one Markdown file - handy for sending to a developer.

Page Rewrites

When the offer on your report lists them, Claude drafts new copy for up to 4 of your weakest pages: a title, a meta description, an H1 and a few sections phrased as the questions customers ask, each with a short answer. They are drafted from each page's own text. Where the page does not contain a fact, the draft leaves a [bracketed] gap for you to fill instead of making one up.

What Else It Includes

  • A crawl of up to 20 pages, taken from your XML sitemap first and then from links on your pages, each scored the same way as the free check
  • Checks only the audit runs: images without alt text, pages that share a title or description, noindex tags, canonicals pointing elsewhere, question sections without FAQ markup, and pages that return errors
  • A prioritised action plan
  • A ready-to-publish llms.txt and Organization schema, built from what the crawl found

Our crawler follows your robots.txt rules for the pages it picks. It identifies itself as FootnotedBot and obeys your "User-agent: *" rules unless you name it. The page you checked is always included.

The AI Visibility Test

When the offer on your report lists it, the audit also tests what AI assistants say:

  1. 1 We work out what your business offers, then write 5 questions a potential customer might ask an AI assistant before they have heard of you - without your brand name in them
  2. 2 We ask Claude each question with live web search switched on, the way a customer would
  3. 3 For each answer, the report shows whether your site was cited, found in the search results or named without a citation, and which sites were cited instead
  4. 4 We also ask Claude what it knows about your brand from its training data alone, without searching

The AI visibility score gives full credit for each answer that cites your site, and half credit when your site was found or named but not cited. With the AI test included, the action plan is written for your site from all of these findings; without it, the plan is built from the checks your pages failed.

Answers Change

AI answers vary from one run to the next and change as the web changes. Treat the visibility test as a snapshot, not a ranking.

How Long It Takes

Usually five to ten minutes. You can leave the page: we email you and send an in-app notification when it is ready, and the report updates by itself if you keep it open.

If It Fails

If the audit cannot finish, we tell you by email and in the app. Open the report and click "Run the extensive audit again" - there is no second charge, and with Footnoted Pro it does not use another of your audits. If it still fails, open a support ticket.

Auditing Again Later

Each extensive audit belongs to one report. To audit the site again after making fixes, run a new free check and run the extensive audit from that report.
