What is Footnoted?

2 min read
Updated Oct 20, 2026

Footnoted checks whether AI assistants - ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google's AI answers and others - can find, read and cite your website, and tells you in plain English what to fix if they can't. This is often called generative engine optimisation, or GEO.

What the Free Check Does

  1. 1 Enter the address of any page on the homepage - no account needed
  2. 2 We read the page the way AI crawlers do, without running JavaScript, and check your robots.txt, llms.txt and XML sitemap
  3. 3 You get a score out of 100, a grade, every check explained, and your top fixes ranked by impact
  4. 4 Download the report as a PDF or share it by link

What It Checks

  • AI crawler access - whether robots.txt lets in the 10 AI search and answer crawlers and 6 training crawlers we check, whether a noindex hides the page, and whether the text is in the HTML
  • Content structure - one clear H1, sections, question-style headings, enough substance to quote, lists and tables
  • Structured data - JSON-LD that says who you are and what the page is
  • Metadata and previews - title, meta description, canonical URL, Open Graph tags and language
  • Trust and freshness - authors, published and updated dates, and links to your sources
  • AI discovery - HTTPS, an XML sitemap, an llms.txt file and response speed

The Extensive Audit

From any finished report you can run an extensive audit for a one-off £1.99. It crawls up to 20 pages of your site and turns every issue into a fix - ranked by severity, with the pages affected, the steps, ready-made code and a prompt to paste into your AI assistant. It also writes you an action plan and a ready-to-publish llms.txt and Organization schema. The offer on your report lists exactly what is included.

If you audit often, Footnoted Pro includes up to 10 extensive audits a month for £4.99, and you can cancel any time.

No Guarantees, Just Signals

No tool can make an AI assistant cite you. Footnoted checks the technical signals that decide whether an assistant can use your site at all, and points you at the fixes that matter most.
